Barhead Travel - Holidays in South Africa - Visiting Kruger National Park
This destination attracts millions of visitors each year, as home to an astounding array of wildlife. Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and one of the biggest and most famous National Parks in the world.
Sandvelds and bushvelds, savannas, open plains, scrublands, thickets, witnessing forests, you will also see the changing African terrain and habitats throughout your journey. Zebras and Springboks, giraffes, there are also over 500 species of bird as well as an abundance of other wildlife including Hippopotami. Lions and not to forget Leopards which are the most elusive of all, buffalo, elephants, the park is home to large numbers of Rhinos. Kruger National Park has become one of the most popular safari destinations in the world and it is possible for you to see all of the 'Big 5' here, over the years. It was first established as a reserve in 1926 to protect wildlife from not only poachers but cattle farmers and hunters as well. The park is located in the north east of South Africa and covers over 2 million hectares.
The park manages to maintain the feeling of uncultivated wilderness making the perfect blend for a safari holiday, despite this. There is a wide choice of tours into the park and numerous lodges positioned throughout offering a wide variety of accommodation. Kruger has a magnificently maintained infrastructure for visitors making it one of the most accessible safari destinations in Africa, despite its vast expanse and diversity.
A stay in one of these lodges adds an extra dimension to any trip and could easily be the highlight of your holiday. Many of which are designed in traditional African style and offer great luxury out in the wilderness, all types of accommodation are available from basic campsites to amazingly luxurious lodges. Day trips to the park are available but there is no way you can experience all that Kruger has to offer in this time and with such a wide choice of lodges available a stay is definitely the better option. It's a good idea to read the park rules carefully and pay special attention to advice not to get out the car, if you do decide on the latter! Safaris here are usually in four wheel drive all-terrain vehicles that are capable of tackling the rugged landscape but hire cars are available for those who want to drive themselves.
